Before we wrap up every single install, there’s a conversation I always make sure we have with the homeowner. 👇
Because handing someone a beautiful new garage door and driving away without this conversation would be doing them a disservice. A great door installed correctly is only half the equation. What you do - and what you watch for - after we leave determines whether that door is still running perfectly in 20 years or giving you problems in 5.
So here’s exactly what we walk every customer through before we call a job done:
Proper fit and finish:
When your door is installed correctly you should have approximately a 1 inch overlap on the top and both sides where the door meets the frame. We check it on every job because the fit is just as important as the door itself. A beautiful door with a sloppy fit is still a sloppy install.
How to maintain it so it actually lasts:
Once or twice a year…that’s all it takes.
Lubricate your springs, rollers, hinges, and tracks with a proper garage door lubricant. Check the bottom seal for cracking or wear, especially going into winter.
What sounds and signs to watch for:
Grinding or squeaking usually means dry rollers or hinges that need lubrication. A popping sound when the door moves can indicate a spring that’s losing tension or a cable that’s starting to fray. And if the door suddenly feels heavy when you lift it manually, your springs need to be looked at immediately.
Your door is only as good as the attention it gets over time, and you deserve to know exactly how to protect it.

We get lake effect snow, below zero cold snaps, freeze - it’s one of the harshest environments a garage door will ever face.
Here’s what that actually does to your door over time:
Rust and wear from salt and moisture. 🌊
This one is sneaky because it builds slowly and then hits you all at once. Salt in the air from the roads, moisture from snow and ice sitting against the bottom seal, condensation cycling in and out as temperatures swing - it works its way into every exposed metal surface.
Warping and cracking from extreme temperature swings. 🌡️
Sometimes we swing 40 degrees in a single day. For a garage door - especially one that wasn’t built for this climate - that kind of thermal expansion and contraction is a serious problem over time.
The solution to almost all of it is 2 things.
1 - An insulated door built for this climate - and we mean genuinely insulated, with a real R-value, not just a single layer of steel with a foam backing.
2 - And regular maintenance. Once or twice a year - lubricate the moving parts, inspect the springs, check the seal, test the balance. Twenty minutes that protects a multi-thousand dollar investment and keeps you from getting stranded on a Tuesday morning in February.
